Mezzotint by John Sartain after a painting by William Nicholas, Richard III endeavouring to persuade the Duke of Buckingham / to consent to the Murder of the Young Princes. Harry Beard Collection.

Kean first played Richard in 1814 and became closely associated with the role. His outfit, a theatrical interpretation of Tudor dress with an ermine-trimmed robe and hat, was the stage's standard costume for Richard III in the 18th and 19th centuries.
