Object history | Made by the donor, Madame V Roullier, shortly after her marriage. She was taught the needlework technique, aged seven, whilst at school in Cairo prior to the First World War. She also saw the technique used in Beyrouth, in the Lebanon, although it had ceased to be made commercially due to the slowness of the making process. The technique was still being taught to orphans in a convent in the Lebanese mountains, who worked edgings for handkerchiefs, collars, mats and nightgowns that were sold to visitors. In 1954, Mme Roullier exhibited this cover at a handicraft exhibition, for which she won first prize. |
