This chimney-piece is in three parts. The lintel is carved in relief with a plain shield in the centre, painted with the date 1660 (?) and surrounded by symmetrical vignette strapwork. The under portion of the lintel and the jambs are carved with deep flutings and rosettes.

It was formerly in the Old Palace, Bromley-by-Bow in East London which was built in 1606 for James I. The palace was demolished in 1893 by the London County Council School Board to make way for a new school.

Physical description
Chimneypiece, stone, the lintel or frieze is carved in relief with a shield in the centre, surrounded by symmetrical strapwork; on either side are scrolling vine stems, from which hang bunches of fruit. The under portion of the lintel and the jambs are carved with deep flutings and rosettes. Formerly in the 'Old Palace' at Bromley-by-Bow, which was built in 1606. English; the shield painted with the date 1660.
Object history
Formerly in the Old palace, Bromley- by- Bow, in East London. Built in 1606 (attributed to the architect John Thorpe c.1565-1655), it was the former residence of James I, but was demolished in 1893 by the London County Council School Board to make way for a new school. Purchased from Mr Joshua Binns, 186 Brompton Road, London in 1894 for £12.
