Vase

mid 17th century (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

This bottle is in the shape of a double gourd; a form commonly found in Chinese ceramics and decorative arts. It symbolises fertility and good fortune. It is also closely associated with the Daoist immortal Han Xiang who is often depicted carrying a magical double gourd.

It is decorated under the glaze with a busy garden landscape scene and geometric patterns, which are all painted in outline. On its base there is an apocryphal Xuande reign mark (1426-35). Marks of the 14th and 15th centuries are commonly found on Tianqi (1621-27) and Chongzhen (1628-44) period ceramics made for both domestic and export markets.
