Place of origin |
The Zoological Society of London was founded in 1826 and is devoted to the further understanding of animals. In particular it is a recognised centre of scientific expertise, and of efforts to conserve animals in the wild. This poster was produced at a time when the Zoo was under threat of closure due to severe financial difficulties. The production of the poster was paid for by the advertising agency Lowe Howard-Spink, as a gesture of goodwill. Using the form of a petition with signatures is an effective way of conveying the urgency of the message, as well as making it feel more personal by inviting visitors to identify with the cause. In this case the 'signatures' are the footprints of a variety of animals in the zoo.
