Claret Jug
About 1867
Shown at the International Exhibition,
Paris, 1867

The form of this flask, intended as a claret jug, is based on a Venetian shape that had spread across Europe by about 1600 and was particularly common in Spain. Its decoration combines Chinese floral ornament of the 15th century with Spanish Moorish arches. The critics were not enthusiastic about the Maës display at the Paris 1867 exhibition.
