The proofs for this Wine Society's Christmas list for 1986 (see E.703-1994 for page 11) were hand coloured, but the outline image was printed in pale blue, a technique devised by the artist John Lawrence (born 1933) for a more successful photo-mechanical reproduction of the black areas.

Photomechanical reproduction does not always do justice to wood
engraving: for example blacks are not consistently dark enough and
details are lost. John Lawrence has therefore devised a technique for
preparing for colour reproduciton by printing the outline image in
pale blue and then hand colouring the image.
