The group represents St Anne teaching the Virgin to read. St Anne, dressed as a widow with hood and veil, stands holding the book: The Virgin, standing beside her, follows the lines with a pointer.
Devotional images of the young Virgin being taught to read by her mother were popular from the fourteenth century onwards, and were to be found in convents, churches and private houses.
