This dolls’ house was made by the German company Moritz Gottschalk. Gottschalk houses from this period are well-known for the being the first dolls’ houses made using lithographed paper over wood for the façade, which achieved architectural detail at low cost. This model is part of a series of the early ‘Blue Roof’ houses for which Gottschalk was notable.
Gottschalk began business in Marienberg, Saxony, in 1865. The company dominated the dolls’ house market from the 1880s to the 1930s. Gottschalk was a talented artist drafted plans for the toys, creating original designs – when he later hired other artists to do this work he continued to work with them. Their dolls’ houses were mass-produced, which made them cheaper to purchase and more accessible to the market as playthings in comparison to earlier dolls' houses.
