Historical context | Possibly intended as decoration for a dessert table. Such dolphins are also known in pairs (see Anton Gabszewicz, Made at New Canton (English Ceramic Circle, 2000), cat. 97, where a pair are dated to ca. 1758). Similar dolphins were incorporated into a figure of Neptune (see C.42-1944) and formed the handle of a sweetmeat dish (see C.986-1924) |
