This elegant capital probably came from a Venetian courtyard, where it would have topped a column in the arcade that ran along the sides. It has an ‘ovolo’ moulding decorated with a band of repeating egg shapes. This was one of seven designs for classical mouldings approved by the Renaissance architect Alberti.

Physical description
Capital. Istrian stone; the bell is carved with a mask, floral designs and acnthus leaves supporting large volutes, upon which rests the abacus with incurved sides. A band of egg and tongue ornament runs beneath the volutes.
