Place of origin

Based in Glasgow, the artist Roger Palmer has developed a sophisticated exploration of landscape in photography. Drawing on the legacies of 1960s land and conceptual art, his practice touches on questions of place, journeying, colonialism, migration, and the process of framing landscape as art.

'SPOOR' comprises of colour photographs made by Roger Palmer while following rail routes between towns and settlements of South Africa. The photographs were accumulated between 2014 and 2018 as Palmer drove along mostly minor roads through the country's nine provinces.

A 'spoor' is the track or scent of an animal or person. In Afrikaans it also refers to rail tracks (South Africa's rail network, used to be called Spoornet). The title of the book suggests acts of following and shadowing determined by these mostly defunct rail routes, many of which are now used as footpaths between township and town. The V&A holds twelve prints from the series, selected by the artist among the eighty-three images in 'SPOOR'.

Mining, apartheid and settler colonialism have shaped South Africa’s rail network. Today, many rail routes – which often connected exclusively white towns to densely populated townships – are disused. Instead, the tracks (‘spoor’ in Afrikaans) have become busy footpaths between places of home and work. Palmer travelled around the country, creating an extensive visual record that explores questions of place, location and migration.
