Born in Liverpool in 1935, April Ashley MBE was a Vogue model, author, activist and socialite. Her tireless campaigning for transgender equality made her an icon and inspiration to many. In 2014 her life was the subject of an exhibition at the Museum of Liverpool entitled 'April Ashley, Portrait of a Lady' which attracted almost one million visitors. Her portrait is on display in Gallery 142 at the V&A on the 1994 Grayson Perry earthenware vase entitled 'My Heroes' (C.10-2009).
