Doll
2022
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

This doll is part of a drive by manufacturer Mattel to be more inclusive in its representation, and as such provides an opportunity to see how mass manufacturers are responding to changing attitudes among young people. This example, from Mattel’s Tribute Collection line, pays homage to Laverne Cox, marking the first time a trans person is represented in Barbie’s world and the first doll in our collection to be actively identified as trans by its manufacturer. Laverne Cox is a real-world trans actress, activist and producer, and the first trans person to be nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award.
