Sylvia Rivera (1951-2002)

Postcard

Artist/Maker
Place of origin

Sylvia Rivera (1951-2002) was a key figure of the so-called Stonewall era as a teenager in 1960s New York, and an early member of the Gay Liberation Front. Alongside Marsha P. Johnson, Rivera co-founded the Street Transvestite Action Revolutionaries (STAR), a group dedicated to helping homeless drag queens, gay youth, and trans women among others. She spent much of her life homeless, crusading widely against homophobia and transphobia, but also against the failures of the LGBTQ community itself to show genuine inclusivity and solidarity. Posthumously, she has been memorialised with monuments, murals, films and other media about her life. Most fittingly, a legal aid organisation called the Sylvia Rivera Law Project (SRLP) was founded in the year of her death to serve the needs of transgender, intersex, and gender non-conforming people of colour and those on low incomes in New York.
