Wedgwood’s ‘Satsuma’ shape was introduced in 1865,
inspired by Japanese lacquer and metalwork shapes. The
flat-sided design of this teaware range suited it to different
styles of decoration, both at Etruria and by outside artists.

Physical description
Teapot and cover, with rounded shape and flat front and back, white pearlware glaze with handpainted decoration of a central bird of paradise with curling tail feathers and a border of vines and flowers, on the other side with letters SAR interwoven.
