Object type
Materials and techniques
The vase is made from a technique known as Bidri that is specific to the city of Bidar in Karnataka State, India. The process involves casting the vase from an alloy of copper and zinc and inlaying the pattern with sterling silver. The vase is then covered in local soil which contains chemical properties that react to the alloy. When the soil is cleaned off, the alloy has turned a rich black colour leaving the silver pattern to shine through.
