Shelving Unit
2005 (designed)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

Self-assembly shelving unit consisting of five HPL (High Pressure Laminate) and ten supports of various form. The shelves are coloured white with black edges. Each shelf has a slot running through its whole length.

The supports are hollow, made from coloured rotational-moulded polyethylene, and have five different designs representing creatures or abstracted faces. Each design has its own name. The lowest, in contact with the floor, is a dark green face with spiked sides ('Sino'). Next up is a light blue head with pronounced nose and chin ('Nono'). Above is a yellow creature with a large face and arms and legs ('Nomo'). Above is pink column-like head with small round eyes and mouth ('Nik'). The topmost is a blue seated creature with its legs stretched out in front of it ('Nosi').

Each support is held in place between the shelves by means of a long steel rod, which passes through the slot in the shelf above into a hole on the top of the support. It then passes out of the bottom of the support and the slot in the shelf below where it is fastened with a wing-nut. The lowest supports which rest on the floor have a depression in the centre-bottom where the wing-nut fits.
