Place of origin |
The Spun chair is one of Heatherwick Studio's most recognisable designs. It began life as a project exploring if the process of metal spinning could be used to create an item of practical seating. The result was sculpture-like rotating symmetrical form which can be used as a seat in any direction it faces. The plastic version was first produced by Magis in 2010.

Brief description | Rotating chair, Spun, Thomas Heatherwick for Magis, 2010 |
Physical description | Rotating chair made from rotational-moulded red polyethylene. The chair's profile vaguely resembles a cotton reel: two larger rings above and below a 'waist', with a narrow point at the base. The sitter is seated inside the bucket-like top, and by redistributing their bodyweight the chair can rotate on this point and the lower ring. The chair is moulded all over with concentric grooves. |
