Place of origin |
Watercolour drawing by Anthony Holland of Lady Macbeth in Giuseppe Verdi’s opera, Macbeth. One of a series of images by Holland showing leading female characters from opera. These are all painted on appropriately atmospheric coloured grounds and there is no indication that they are designs for specific productions. They lack the usual annotations found on Holland's costume designs.
Anthony Holland (1912-2001) was a successful designer of sets and costumes for the theatre. He designed plays, opera, pantomime and popular entertainment, including revues and strip club shows. His early work was with regional repertory companies but, after the Second World War, he worked in London. He was noted for designing witty costumes for pantomime dames and was in demand to design ice shows.
