Object history
The sari belonged to Anna Pavlova (1881-1931), the Russian ballerina. She was photographed wearing it in Bombay in 1923 (see NCOL.18-2023). She went to India again in 1928.
The sari is from the collection of Roberta & John Lazzarini, founders of the Pavlova Museum, Ivy House, London. It was given to John & Roberta Lazzarini by Madame Manya Charchevenikova, Pavlova's costume maker and dresser from the time of her early seasons in London. The V&A purchased the sari at Kerry Taylor Auctions Ltd. (Lot 311, 6th Dec, 2022, Passion for Fashion & Ballet)
