THE PATTERN BOOKS

Josiah’s cream-coloured earthenware patterns were widely employed on Wedgwood’s useful ware. The simple but elegant designs were illustrated in pattern books from which customers could choose their tableware. The books had a dual purpose however; not only did they provide an accurate record of the designs available, but also acted as a ‘pretty amuzement, for the ladies’ to browse through before ordering their wares.

Many good effects this must produce, when business, & amusement can be made to go hand in hand.
