Place of origin

Armenian-Iranian artist Sirak Melkonian was born in 1931 in Tehran. He was already well-known for his figurative Expressionist paintings in the 1950s, before becoming a pioneer of abstract art in Iran. This linocut is an edition from one of the series Melkonian presented at the Tehran Biennale in 1958, for which he received the Imperial court award. The success of both Melkonian's and Parviz Tanavoli's prints at this Biennale led to the medium of printmaking being accepted by the establishment as an important artistic medium.
