This artwork, My Umuma, is one of three made by the artist as part of the Talisman Series, a series of artworks exploring apotropaia in traditional Middle Eastern costume and jewelry, and how protective colours, motifs and materials are embedded into worn material culrture. My Umuma explores the protective qualities of white agate specifcially, a stone traditionally believed to protect expectant mothers and to enhance milk production. It is a textile reconstruction of white agate stone, mimicking the lines and effects of the different tones and shades of white. it is intended to exude a soft, natural and organic feel, as an interpretation of motherhood.

The artist, Nour Hage, was a Jameel Fellow at the V&A from 2021-2.
