The panel shows the Deposition of Christ from the Cross.
In the foreground lies the body of Christ, the left arm supported by St. John. In the centre beneath the shaft of the cross is the kneeling figure of the Virgin, flanked by seven mourning figures. To the right are male figures carrying (right) the nails and (left) the crown of thorns.
Bandinelli is one of the principal Florentine mannerist sculptors. He is best known for his colossal group of Hercules and Cacus (completed 1534) outside the Palazzo della Signoria, Florence and for his hostility to Michelangelo.
