High back shaped above and below, and filled in with canework. The cresting is carved with scrolls and gadroons. The front legs which are in the forms of flattened scrolls, and are joined by a deep pediment-shaped curved rail decorated with gadroons and leaves. There are three turned stretchers, two being joined by a rail formed of a straight piece and two curved pieces.

Condition: Slightly worn, with a finial missing from the rail joining the stretchers. Covered with modern upholstery when purchased.

Walnut chair with cane seat and back, English, 17th century. Re-caned June 1983 by John Haynes & Son
Physical description

Object history
Purchased from a dealer Major Charles E. Earle, 25 Haverstock Hill, London NW, on 9th March 1911. The chair and its pair (with W.64-1911) had belonged to a Mrs Cox, 16 Douglas Mansions, West End Road but had no earlier history(Nominal File: Earler, Charles E. Major, MA/1/E35, 1910-911.
