This decorative paper is part of a group (see E.181-1998 to E.187-1998 and E.195-1998 and E.196-1998) published in the 1980s by the Judd Street Gallery from designs of the 1920s and '30s. The designs were originally published by the Curwen Press. Examples of the original Curwen Press papers by Enid Marx, Edward Bawden and Eric Ravilious are also represented in the collection.
Enid Marx (1902–98) designed pattern papers for various publishers and galleries. Her first papers for Curwen Press in 1925 were among her earliest experiments with wood engraving. Each square here originated in a single tiny wood engraved block, which she turned 180 degrees and back again alternately to create her dynamic patterns. The wood engravings were then transferred to lithography to create the repeating pattern across a larger sheet. The tiny block from which this repeating pattern originated is in the Archive of Art and Design: AAD/2007/1179.
