Cole's diary of the journey comprises 52 numbered pages, written in ink with ink sketches, interleaved with blank sheets.
Following the journal are six letters from Minton to Cole, dated Dec. 29, 1851-Mar. 22, 1852.
Also bound in the volume are two printed maps, marked with the journey; an engraved panoramic view of Cologne; three timetables; two playbills; a menu; a price list from the Königlichen Porzellan-Manufaktur in Berlin; and 34 miscellaneous bills (chiefly from hotels) and receipts.

Binding: Half bound [in 1870?] in red morocco with red cloth over boards; spine title in gold letters; marbled endpapers; top edge gilt; "bound by Riviere" at foot of first free endpaper. Spine title: MSS. notes of a journey to and from Vienna. MDCCCLI.

Object history | Written by Henry Cole in 1851. Part of a collection of material relating to Henry Cole once owned by his great grand-daughter, Cynthia Dutnall. The collection was sold by her grandson. Purchased in 1997, together with another travel journal entitled Notes of a journey to Palermo and back in October, November & December, MDCCCLXVIII : in company with Lieut.-Col. Scott, R.E. (MSL/1997/2/2), with the aid of a grant from the Friends of the National Libraries. |
