Diary, notes, sketches and printed reports of a journey to Italy undertaken on behalf of the South Kensington Museum.

Pagination: 15, [9], vii, [1], 1-114, 114a-114h, 115-147, [3] p. (interleaved).
P. 1-[16] constitute Cole's diary of the journey. This is followed by 4 leaves of agendas. An index (vii p.) is followed by detailed notes on the art seen. Between p. 32 and 33 are 4 leaves from another notebook, containing pencil sketches. A printed map, marked with the journey, is bound at the front.
Two printed reports, detailing the results of the trip, are bound at the end, including Notes of objects in Italy suitable for reproduction by various methods. Cole, Henry, London : Printed by George E. Eyre and William Spottiswoode ... for Her Majesty's Stationery Office, 1870.

Object history
Written by Henry Cole in 1868. Part of a collection of material relating to Henry Cole once owned by his great grand-daughter, Cynthia Dutnall. The collection was sold by her grandson. Purchased in 1997, together with another travel journal entitled Notes of a journey to Vienna and back in November and December MDCCCLI : in company with Herbert Minton (MSL/1997/2/1), with the aid of a grant from the Friends of the National Libraries.
