Place of origin

Ibrahim Kamara, known professionally as Ib, is a stylist, photographer, and creative director. Born in Sierra Leone, he moved to Gambia as a child due to the civil war before settling in London aged 16 where he still lives and works. Kamara studied fashion communication at Central Saint Martins. Since graduating his career has gone from strength to strength and he is widely celebrated as one of the leading contemporary stylists, popular with the late Virgil Abloh, Burberry, Erdem, Dior and Kenneth Ize. Through his work Kamara aims to address and challenge conventional ideas of race, gender and sexuality. His work is often a celebration of Blackness, and African identity and beauty. Alongside working as a stylist, Kamara became editor-at-large for i-D magazine in 2019 and was appointed the editor-in-chief for Dazed magazine in 2021. He often collaborates with photographers on his work but has recently started exploring photography himself. These works are styled and photographed by Kamara, marking this turning point in his creative practice.

The works have been commissioned by the V&A as part of the Africa Fashion exhibition. They are inspired by Malian fashion designer Chris Seydou (1949-1994) and photographs of his work by Nabil Zorkot, alongside the work of American photographer Irving Penn. Inspired by the exhibition narrative, and the work of Seydou, Kamara proposed creating new photographic works of a model wearing historic pieces by the designer. The pieces photographed belong to Lydie Ullmann, a former model, muse and friend of Seydou. Ullmann attended the shoot and spoke to Kamara and the model about the original styling of the clothes. Kamara chose the Ghanian model Grace Naa Ayorkor Quaye, who he had previously collaborated with, for the shoot. The photographs speak to the role of styling and photography in the contemporary fashion scene, and honour the legacy of designers like Seydou, pioneering African creatives who were the first to work across their countries and across the world.

Creative Direction

Ibrahim Kamara is a leading voice of this generation of cutting-edge fashion creatives. He elevates styling into an artform. His work challenges conventional ideas of race, gender, beauty and sexuality. This selection of works is styled and photographed by Kamara, marking a turning point in his creative practice that sees him taking charge of the composition, capturing the desired image himself. Inspired by designer Chris Seydou (1949-94) and photographer Irving Penn (1917-2009), Kamara shot model Grace Naa Ayorkor Quaye wearing vintage Seydou. `I was very drawn to the work of Chris Seydou. I find his story particularly moving. It has been a tremendous privilege to photograph his clothing, and to be able to create this tribute to such a remarkable person.’
