Komachi-beni was originally the brand name for rouge sold by safflower traders in Kyoto. It relates to the renowned 9th-century poetess, Ono no Komachi, who was known for her beauty. Beni rouge is typically applied to the lips using a make-up brush. These brushes, specially designed for Komachi-beni, are very dense, so when moistened they can hold enough liquid to dissolve the dry green rouge into a vivid red.
