The cosmetics manufacturer Isehan Honten, established in Edo (present-day Tokyo) in 1825, is the only surviving company that produces beni rouge with an iridescent green lustre. It is made from the highest quality safflower petals, harvested in Yamagata Prefecture in north-east Japan. When applied thickly, the layers of red rouge dry as green. The shade of green differs each year, depending on the harvest quality, production environment and the skills of the artisans making it.
