On verso: 'St. Joan of Arc. Virgin. Feast: May 30. Called the " Maid of Orleans," she at age seventeen obeyed the supernatural voices which commanded her to liberate the French from the English invaders. Her successes ended when the Dauphin was crowned at Rheims as Charles VIII. He weakly allowed her to be captured by the Burgundians and sold to the English, who had her burned at the stake as a heretic. Fourteen years later her case was retired, and she was declared not only innocent, but holy. Prayer. St. Joan, pray for France, that her people may respond here and now to the great graces of God has showered upon them all through the centuries. Heveanly 83. Printed in Italy.' |
