This gold medal was struck to commemorate the Melbourne Exhibition in 1888. On the reverse side is the Southern Cross, with a motto and a wreath of oak leaves and wattle.

Physical description | Gold medal. Obv., portriat bust of Her Majesty Queen Victoria, after the design on the Jubilee medal by the late Sir J.E Boehm, R.A., with the exception that the crown on that work is replaced by one taken from the New Zealand War medal; inscribed 'Centennial International Exhibition, Melbourne.' Rev., in the centre the five stars of the Southern Cross surrounded by the motto 'Artibus dignis honor insignis', and a sprig of oak leaves tied by a ribbon to a sprig of wattle. Signed 'Melbourne Mint. Stokes & Martin S.C' and 'C.V' On the edge is inscribed 'The Educational Department.' |
