The Makuzu workshop was established in Yokohama in 1871 by the Kyoto potter Miyagawa Kozan (1842-1916). It initially produced Satsuma-style pottery painted in polychrome enamels and gold, but during the 1880s it focused increasingly on the making of porcelain decorated in Chinese style. The spout and handle on this winepot are in the form of a dragon while its lid is in the shape of a Chinese gate.
