This rendering of a puppy owes much of its success to the skillful use of incising to represent the animal's fur. The Hirado kilns were located in Mikawachi, to the south of the large porcelain-manufacturing centre of Arita in western Japan. Founded in the early 1600s, they became important producers of porcelain for export to the west during the nineteenth century.
