Gallery label | These gravity-defying ‘heel-less shoes’ are the signature style of artist Noritaka Tatehana. They are inspired by the elevated wooden clogs worn by courtesans during the Edo period (1615–1868). The three pairs seen here are Tatehana’s latest creation made in collaboration with the cosmetics company, Isehan Honten. The partnership was made possible by the Edo Tokyo Kirari Project, initiated by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government, which aims to promote the enduring appeal of the capital’s traditional craftsmanship into the 21st century.(31/5/2022) |
