Bowl and Figure
2006 (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

Hans Stofer (born 1957)
‘Robin Day’
2006
By deliberately breaking away the side of
a bowl and lovingly gilding the jagged edge,
Hans Stofer has created a dramatic arena for
a porcelain bird. This cheerful, everyday figure
might otherwise have attracted little attention.
In doing so, Stofer poses questions about the
significance of the objects that surround us.
Made in London
Porcelain bowl with applied gold leaf,
porcelain figure, steel and magnets
Museum no. C.80:1, 2-2007
Acquired through the generosity of Gerard and Sarah Griffin

Part of 'robinday', bone china, gilding, porcelain and magnets, Hans Stofer, 2006
Physical description
Sculptural work, comprising a found porcelain figure of a bird (probably a Chaffinch) within a bone china bowl. One side of the bowl has been broken away, and the broken edge gilded, so that the opening frames the figure. The base of the figure and the interior of the bowl are fitted with metal plates, which allow three small magnets to hold the figure in place withing the bowl.
