Prayer Mat

1800-1880 (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

Mat or hanging, plain-weave cotton embroidered with silk in straight, stem and chain stitches, padded, backed with roller printed cotton and faced with roller printed cotton.
It looks as if it might have been reduced in length, but it hasn't and some faint under-drawing can be seen along the lower edge. The roundel at the top of the niche contains floral motifs and not a religious inscription. The facing has not been carefully attached and it obscures the outer edge of the border. This may be a domestic, and not a professional, embroidery.
