The Bing & Grøndahl factory was founded in 1853 and rose to be one of the two largest ceramic manufacturers in Denmark, alongside competitor Royal Copenhagen. Two years after this piece was made, the two factories merged and Bing & Grøndahl’s original factory was closed down.

The artist who created this tray, Edith Sonne Bruun, was artist in residence at Bing & Grøndahl from 1962. She was particularly renowned for the intensity of colour she achieved in her glazed works.
