This costume is worn by the character Jamie New from the British musical 'Everybody's Talking About Jamie'. The musical, which was inspired by the 2011 British television documentary 'Jamie: Drag Queen at 16', premiered at the Crucible Theatre Sheffield in 2017 before transferring to the West End. It has now been performed internationally and been adapted for film (2021). The musical follows the true-life story of 16-year-old British schoolboy Jamie Campbell, as he overcomes prejudice and bullying to become a drag queen.
This finale costume, designed by Anna Fleischle, reflects the individuality she wanted to express with each character. The items are all high street pieces of clothing which would be accessible and affordable to Jamie, which have been customised with fringing and beading using DIY techniques. Worn in the finale scene, it celebrates the creativity, flamboyance and confidence of the character as well as recognising the authenticity of Jamie's status as a struggling working-class teenager.
