This is a silver gilt medal made in the 17th century. This medal was awarded to Robert Welch for saving the Standard at the battle of Edgehill. The obverse of this medal represents the profile busts of King Charles I and Prince Charles. The reverse shows the Royal Standard. Edgehill was notable for the incident in which Sir Edmund Verney died defending the Royal Standard, which was captured by Parliamentarian Ensign Arthur Young, and recaptured by Robert Welch, commander of a troop of horse (who was knighted the following day by a grateful King Charles).
