Kati Tuominen-Niittylä was a pupil of Kyllikki Salmenhaara, one of Finland's most influential artists.
Tuominen's work shows an interest in shapes, while also demonstrating the understanding of materials that Salmenhaara placed such emphasis on in her teaching. The rough body is known as chamotte, a technique in which fired porcelain or stoneware (‘grog’) is incorporated into the clay, reducing its shrinkage in firing.
