Place of origin

This is an Albert medal of the 1st class. The medal was made in England in 1877. This medal is in bronze, with the letters V.A. in gold on crimson enamel, surrounded by a bronze garter with inscription, 'FOR GALLANTRY IN SAVING LIFE ON LAND,' in gilt letters. This medal is also surmounted by the crown of the late Prince Consort and has a red and white striped ribbon.

The Albert Medal (AM) was introduced on 7 March 1866, and named after the consort Price Albert who died in 1861. A royal warrant issued in 1867 created two classes of AM, first and second class. Ten years later, in 1877, the warrant was altered to allow the saving of life on land to be recognised by the award of the Albert Medal. Along with the Edward Medal it is one of three gallantry awards that were later replaced by the George Cross.
