Challenging the prevailing taste for sober, minimalist black some designers in the mid-1980s created colourful alternatives for men’s formalwear. Here, Scott Crolla has re-created a traditional Nehru jacket silhouette but in dramatic silver and black silk. In a modern mixing of traditions Crolla uses a fabric based on an Italian Renaissance textile design. Crolla design’s drew on ethnic and historical styles, often incorporating exotic fabrics, as seen in this jacket. He also worked for Georgina Godley for some time, producing collections that reinvigorated London's fashion industry in the 1980s.
