Doll, glazed china shoulder head with bald pate and human hair wig, elaborately styled with a braid and low chignon supported on two black-wax ended pins. Wearing a beaded and ribboned silk net cap-cum-bonnet with velvet ribbon and long lappets. Painted wood legs with flat-soled ankle boots and striped stockings, red flannel bloomers, linen chemise, warm 'hairy' wool flannel petticoat, crinoline petticoat in linen with hoops, grey&white striped linen-wool blend petticoat, top skirt in black silk taffeta with embroidered horseshoes around hem accented with beads, scalloped hem, buttons down front and back of skirt which extends into a small train. Wide ribbon belt, blue blouse with masculine collar and cuffs with horse's heads delicately drawn on them. Accompanied by an unregistered black velvet paletot, which matches up with fabrics used on the doll and would complete the outfit, which is an elegant walking ensemble of its time.

| Object history | Laetitia Clark (born 1741) dressed 13 dolls between 1754 and 1814 in miniature fashionable outfits of the day using fabric from her own clothes. To accessorise the dolls she also collected miniature furniture and household utensils. In 1761 Laetitia married David Powell, a London merchant, at St Botolph's, Bishopgate, London. The couple continued to live in that area, and one of their sons was the grandfather of the founder of the Boy Scouts, General Sir Robert Baden-Powell. Further dolls - dressed by the granddaughters and great-granddaughters of Laetita Powell - were added to the collection up to 1911. This doll was dressed in a fashionable walking outfit of November 1865. The collection both illustrates the styles of dress of the period, the fabrics available, and the types of dolls that were available. |
