Physical description | Cabinet veneered with king wood, on a modern stand. Beneath the cornice is a convex frieze with drawer. The cabinet is closed by two hinged doors and contains an arrangement of drawers surrounding a central cupboard fitted with two small drawers; the doors are veneered on the outside with pieces of king wood forming patterns with a circle in the centre, and decorated on the inside with plain oval panels. The modern stand has five turned spiral legs and is fitted with two drawers. Description of the parts (2019) 1 cabinet carcase with ogee cornice and ogee base moulding, 82.5 x 97 x 51cm With two side-hung doors veneered on all faces (the outside with geometric design around a central roundel, using oyster cut veneers, the inside with a large oval of burr veneer surrounded by oyster cuts, and veneers of plain oak on the lock edge and under edge), the left door fitted with brass finger bolts at top and bottom, the right door fitted with a lock; with an inner frame which supports a series of drawers, around a central cupboard door held on two orate brass hinges, and with arch pattern veneer (with lock but now missing its escutcheon); the sides veneered with four vertical, book-matched strips and with wide cross banding on three sides, which is angled to a central line on each side. softwood and some oak, dovetailed; the top stained oak. Full dust boards with cockbead; the back with oak boards, horizontally grained, nailed into rebates in the top and sides, the bottom rail. Inscribed behind Room 56 29-10-49. 2 plain cushion frieze drawer, 7.5 x 94 x 48cm the front veneered on softwood with oak facing on top edge; without brass pull handle, the sides oak; the bottom (replaced) of oak, 3 boards running front to back, nailed up into rebates in the sides and back (1/4”), and thicker front 3 second tier drawer PR 12.3 x 42.7 x 42.5cm; oak throughout; through dovetailed (x3), the bottoms (original) consisting of three boards running front to back, nailed up into rebates. The sides stained just behind the drawer front. Veneered with kingwood and burr wood; with original brass pull 4 second tier drawer PL 12.3 x 42.7 x 42.5cm; oak throughout; through dovetailed (x3), the bottoms (original) consisting of three boards running front to back, nailed up into rebates. The sides stained just behind the drawer front. Veneered with kingwood and burr wood; with original brass pull 5 small drawer, one of three PR flanking the central cupboard, (top) 10.2 x 28 x 42.5cm; oak throughout, dovetailed with the bottom (some repairs) grained front to back, and nailed up into rebates in all four sides 6 ditto, middle 7 ditto, bottom 8 removeable drawer unit (with four drawers), from the central cupboard, dovetailed softwood stained black, the back nailed on. 33.2 x 28.4 x 10.6cm; the front edges of the sides and dustboards also veneered. Resting on an iron spring. 9 drawer from removeable drawer unit, the top of four; oak throughout and dovetailed; the bottom of oak, running side to side, glued into the rebated sides, back and front; fitted with a single round brass knob; 7 x 26.3 x 10cm 10 ditto, second of four 11 ditto, third of four 12 ditto, bottom of four 13 small drawer, one of three PL flanking the central cupboard, (top) 10.2 x 28 x 42.5cm; oak throughout, dovetailed with the bottom (some repairs) grained front to back, and nailed up into rebates in all four sides 14 ditto, middle 15 ditto, bottom 16 drawer, one of six on a softwood framework, located behind the removeable drawer unit; top left oak, stained black; glued and with steel pins, with a turned wood knob 7.5 x 12.5 x 7cm 17 ditto, top right 18 ditto, second row left 19 ditto, second row right 20 drawer, one of six on a softwood framework, located behind the removeable drawer unit; third row oak, stained black; dovetailed, with a turned wood knob 7.5 x 26.7 x 7.4cm 21 drawer, one of six on a softwood framework, located behind the removeable drawer unit; bottom row oak, stained black; dovetailed, with a turned wood knob 7.5 x 26.7 x 7.4cm 22 drawer, bottom tier of cabinet, with false double front with central cock bead, and two brass pulls 17.3 x 86.5 x 42.8cm Oak sides and front, through dovetailed construction, the back (softwood) is replaced; the bottom consists of six oak boards, running front to back, nailed into rebates in the sides, front and back. 23 sliding oak fillet, from the vertical edge of the central cupboard door (lock side), pierced for the lock bolt, which reveals two cavities for papers, above and below the lock. 24 stand 80.5 x 101.5 x 54cm softwood and oak, with veneering and graining and solid twist turn legs 25 drawer to stand, PR 9 x 39.5 x 47.5cm oak, dovetailed, with 3-ply bottom; and replica brass pull 26 drawer to stand, PL 9 x 39.5 x 47.5cm oak, dovetailed, with 3-ply bottom; and replica brass pull 27 keys, 3 old (2 large, one small) |
