Pine with walnut veneer and the inscription ‘MARIA CHARSLEY MDCXXXX2’ (1692), but made in the late 19th century.
W.49-1929
The proportions, interior construction and the angular character of the lettering on the lid of the box and stylized tulips on the top, suggest that it was made in the late 19th century in imitation of an earlier style.
No ‘Maria Charsley’ has been traced through the International Genealogical Index although several Mary and Marie Charsleys are recorded in Buckinghamshire and the City of London in the mid-17th century. The box may have been made as a memorial to an ancestor.
