Gyokusendо̄ is a 205-years-old family-run workshop in Tsubame, Niigata Prefecture, specialised in hand-hammered tsuiki copperware. Tsubame is one of the two manufacturing cities located in the heart of Niigata Prefecture internationally known for finest quality metal crafting. The traditional tsuiki metalworking technique of Gyokusendо̄ is designated an Intangible Cultural Property by Japan’s Agency for Cultural Affairs. A sheet of copper is raised into a three-dimensional vessel with repeated hammer strikes. Seamless spout kettles made from single sheets of copper are the ultimate expression of the company’s artisan skills.
