The rustic scenes are in the style of the Flemish painter, David Teniers the Younger (1610-90), whose paintings were an extremely popular source of inspiration for enamel artists. Dutch painting was particularly fashionable in France in the mid-18th century.

Sir Arthur Gilbert and his wife Rosalinde amassed one of the world's great decorative art collections, including silver, mosaics, enamelled portrait miniatures and gold boxes. Arthur Gilbert donated his extraordinary collection to Britain in 1996.

Rectangular gold snuffbox with six enamel-painted scenes; Gabriel-Raoul Morel, Paris, 1819-32.
Physical description
Rectangular snuffbox with six enamel plaques painted with citizens and peasants feasting and carousing, after David Teniers the Younger. The gold mounts are chased with shells, scrolls and foliage. The thumbpiece consists of emeralds and diamonds in silver settings.
